INFO

We Delen de Lucht is a short film exploring shared loneliness and grief through the lives of three strangers, each navigating loss in their own way. As Art Director, I was responsible for translating the emotional themes of the script into a cohesive visual language, developing character identities, location styling, mood boards, prop direction, and an art plan that guided the production from pre-production through filming.

As Art Director, I was responsible for translating the emotional themes of the script into a cohesive visual language, developing character identities, location styling, mood boards, prop direction, and an art plan that guided the production from pre-production through filming.

PROBLEM

The biggest challenge was ensuring each character felt visually distinct while still belonging to the same emotional world. a chaotic punk environment, a controlled and clinical apartment, and a warm sense of nostalgia all needed their own identity, yet the film as a whole had to feel connected. Working within the limitations of a student production also meant creating strong visual storytelling through carefully chosen colours, materials, props, and existing locations rather than relying on large-scale set builds.

SOLUTION

Preparation gave us direction, but being on set required flexibility. I used the art plan as a creative framework rather than a rigid set of rules, making decisions in real time based on the location, lighting, available resources, and the needs of each scene. Whether adjusting props, refining compositions, or responding to unexpected changes, my role was to protect the emotional intention behind the story while collaborating closely with the wider crew.
